Planning an event is exciting, but one of the first questions almost everyone asks is:
“How much does entertainment cost?” The honest answer is…it depends. But probably not for the reasons you think.

Before Charlie and I started The Trade Entertainment, we were performers ourselves. That experience gave us a unique perspective because we’ve been on both sides of the business. We understand what it takes to create an unforgettable performance, and we also understand what it’s like to plan an event and work within a budget. Our goal has never been to sell people the most expensive option. It’s to help them choose entertainment that fits their event, their guests, and their budget.

Here’s a look at what really goes into entertainment pricing and how you can get the most value for your investment.

The First Hour Is Always the Most Expensive

This is something most people don’t realize at first. That first hour includes a lot more than just showing up. There is travel, sometimes across Houston traffic, getting into costume, hair and makeup, setup, and coordinating with the event.

Because of that, it is usually more cost-effective to hire fewer entertainers for a longer period of time instead of trying to fit a lot into one hour. We explain this to clients all the time because it can really help stretch your budget.

Ambient Entertainment vs. Show Performances

Another big factor in pricing is what you are actually asking the entertainer to do.

There are two main styles: Ambient or strolling entertainment – This includes greeting guests, taking photos, moving through the crowd, and adding to the atmosphere.

Show-based entertainment – This is a choreographed performance, usually high energy and done in a short set, around 10 to 20 minutes.

Here is what surprises a lot of people – You often pay the same for a short show as you would for an hour of ambient entertainment. That is because a show takes a completely different level of preparation. It includes rehearsals, choreography, timing, and a lot of energy in a short amount of time.

What You Are Actually Paying For

When you hire professional entertainment, you’re investing in much more than the time someone spends at your event. You’re also paying for years of experience, ongoing training, quality costumes, equipment, rehearsals, insurance, professionalism, and reliability. The best entertainers make everything look effortless, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that most guests never see.

One thing Charlie and I have always believed is that taking care of our entertainers leads to a better experience for our clients. We work with performers we know, trust, and genuinely enjoy working with because we know they’ll arrive prepared, professional, and excited to be part of your event.

Typical Entertainment Pricing in Houston

Every event is different, but here is a realistic starting point based on what we see every day. Location, customization, setup complexity, and timing can all affect pricing.

  • Stilt Walkers ~$500 / 2 hrs – Basic stilt walkers, not LED or mirror costumes
  • Aerialists ~$1,000+ / 2 hrs – Varies based on rigging, apparatus, and setup
  • Cigar Rollers ~$1,000+ – Depends on quantity and customization
  • Live Bands ~ $1,000 / 2 hrs (duo) – Can scale up significantly depending on band size
  • Dancers Ambient (or shorter Showcases): ~$350 / hr
  • DJs ~$1,000 – Often covers up to ~4 hrs depending on setup and needs

Looking for the Best Value?

If you’re working with a budget, there are still plenty of ways to create a memorable event. Models, roller skaters, belly dancers and hula hoop entertainers are some of the most versatile. They can: interact with guests, fit almost any theme, work for both kids and adults, be styled in different ways depending on your event.

Typical pricing is around $400 / 2 hrs, and they bring a lot of energy for the cost.
